Description: This paper undertakes to give dossiers of essentially all the actuaries who entered the profession in Canada or the United States up to about 1872. It includes those who died or left the profession before the Actuarial Society of America was formed in April 1889, and those who, in due course, became Fellows of that Society when or after it came into being. The paper also mentions some of the conditions under which the Actuarial Society was organized, and suggests that a yet fuller story of how the actuarial pioneers coped with circumstances and events of more than a century ago would be a desirable record to document. Description: Covers the experience between policy anniversaries in 1973 - 1978 in the first twenty-five policy years after issue i.e., 1949 - 1977. For issues of 1974 and later the classification 'large amount' refers to policies of $100,000 or more prior to 1974 the classification includes policies of $50,000 or more.

Description: A new approach to computing annual pension costs, based on an open-group projection of the participant population for a number of years, was described in detail in a paper published in the 1975 Transactions, entitled 'The Forecast Valuation Method for Pension Plans.' That paper described the operation of such a cost method at the initial valuation date. This paper discusses several alternative approaches to projection valuation methods and also describes how costs should be computed at valuation dates after the first one. In addition, the author illustrates projected contributions and asset buildups under both traditional [closed-group] cost methods and projected [open-group] cost methods, for a number of years under a variety of assumptions as to the growth rate of the participant group. Projection valuation methods have not been described heretofore in sufficient detail to make it possible for actuaries to use them on a recurring basis or for the Internal Revenue Service to make a determination as to the acceptability of such approaches for computing tax-deductible pension plan contributions.
